![]() What’s new: Blue Line and data validation In a new study published in Urban Science, researchers including Daniel Mendoza and Logan Mitchell report the latest from the TRAX Observation Project, including data validation studies that bolster the data’s value for other researchers and three case studies from recent events showcasing the abilities of the mobile air quality sensors. Now the study, once a passion project of U researchers, has become a state-funded long-term observatory, with an additional sensor on the Blue Line into Sandy and Draper and additional insights into the events that impact the Salt Lake Valley’s air, including summer fireworks and winter inversions. Their top answers in order were: cleaning and disinfecting limiting passenger loads for proper social distancing increased service levels and reduced fares. This article, originally published in February 26, 2020, was written by Paul Gabrielsen, Science Writer, University of Utah Communicationsįor more than five years, University of Utah air quality sensors have hitched rides on TRAX light rail trains, scanning air pollution along the train’s Red and Green Lines. When nonriders were asked what would increase their likelihood of returning, their top four answers in order were: continuing to limit passenger loads to accommodate social distancing better cleaning and disinfecting a change in their need to travel to work once the pandemic ends and offering increased service levels.Ĭurrent riders gave a slightly different list about what would help keep them riding. When the survey asked why passengers stopped riding - and allowed them to list all of their contributing reasons - 55% said they now work from home, 48% said they switched to driving personal vehicles, and 42% said It was because of concern for their personal health and safety. ![]() Recent surveys conducted by UTA found that two of every five (41%) customers who stopped riding UTA during the pandemic say it is unlikely that they will ever return. UTA received $187 million in a first round of aid from Congress, and a package passed last month added another $33.5 million. UTA Executive Director Carolyn Gonot said UTA has been able to make ends meet financially amid such loss in ridership largely because of emergency federal aid. “It’s a big gap to close, he added, “But I was encouraged to see that at least inching back up in a positive direction through the course of the year.”Ĭummins said that while UTA has lost groups such as office workers, who largely have worked at home during the pandemic, “The one thing that has stayed constant is the essential worker” whom he said still needs UTA daily. “Not that being down by 47% is great, but when you think of losing only half of our ridership with all the major institutions that are fundamentally” converting to working at home, “it’s actually pretty amazing that we’ve held that ratio as well as we have,” he said. UTA Board Chairman Carlton Christensen said he’s actually surprised that ridership isn’t down even more. He noted that UTA ridership had actually been increasing in January and February last year before COVID-19 hit, and then it plummeted without ever recovering much. He said riders took 23.53 million trips in 2020, down from 44.24 million in 2019. The maximum loadable weight for a 53’ refrigerated trailer is 43,500 lbs. There is no longer an equipment fee with Optimum internet, and the equipment you get isn't half bad, either. Of course, the fine print says "Pricing, terms and offers subject to change and discontinuance without notice," but the price guarantee is a nice step in the right direction for a company that has struggled with customer satisfaction lately. After the second year, a moderate price increase ($10 for most plans) may go into effect. Hefty and unpredictable price increases were recently a concern with Optimum internet, but the ISP has since placed a two-year price guarantee on all plans for new customers. Again, that won't matter much if you're just interested in internet service, but if you want to add TV, know that it will be more expensive without the bundle savings. It also means that the bundle savings, which are typically the incentive for signing up for a bundle package, are also gone. The real point of FlexAbility plans seems to be that Optimum isn't trying to lock you into a particular bundle package with services you don't need - a less frequent but still common practice of cable internet providers - or any trap pricing schemes that will have you upgrading to a more expensive plan every year or so ( looking at you, Cox). ![]() At the reference level, the VU meter shows "0" for a sine-wave tone, but the engineer must know that, with music or speech, to always infer that peak levels are always between 6 dB and 10 dB higher than the reference level. When using a VU meter, the audio system is calibrated with a sine wave tone at a "reference level" for the system. This means that it responds to changing audio signals at a very precise speed, rising from no signal to 99% of "0 VU" when a 1 kHz sine wave tone is applied for 300 milliseconds. A real VU meter has a very specific "ballistic characteristic". They created a meter that did not measure peaks, but simply inferred them. ![]() The designers of the VU meter therefore took a different approach. Since a VU meter is a mechanical device, it can never reflect the instantaneous signal peaks of complex audio signals. The original designers of the VU meter were tasked with finding a way to measure complex audio signals with a simple technology. In the broadcast industry, loudness monitoring was standardized, in 2009 in the United States by the ATSC A/85, in 2010 in Europe by the EBU R-128, in 2011 in Japan by the TR-B32, and in 2010 in Australia by the OP-59. Purely electronic devices may emulate the response of the needle they are VU-meters in as much as they respect the standard. In effect, the scale ranges from −20 VU to +3 VU, with −3 VU right in the middle (half the power of 0 VU). The meter was designed not to measure the signal, but to let users aim the signal level to a target level of 0 VU (sometimes labelled 100%), so it is not important that the device is non-linear and imprecise for low levels. For this reason many audio practitioners prefer the VU meter to its alternatives, though the meter indication does not reflect some of the key features of the signal, most notably its peak level, which in many cases, must not pass a defined limit.Ġ VU is equal to +4 dBu, or 1.228 volts RMS, a power of about 2.5 milliwatts when applied across a 600- ohm load. This has the effect of averaging out peaks and troughs of short duration, and reflects the perceived loudness of the material more closely than the more modern and initially more expensive PPM meters. The mass of the needle causes a relatively slow response, which in effect integrates or smooths the signal, with a rise time of 300 ms. If the particular music had not been compressed you would probably be listening to an average music level of 40 watts with peaks jumping to 225 watts. The original VU meter is a passive electromechanical device, namely a 200 ♚ DC d'Arsonval movement ammeter fed from a full-wave copper-oxide rectifier mounted within the meter case. Your amplifier is indeed outputting 225 watts. This technique is outline in a video called The Loudness War. The idea is to get their music noticed over all others. The band and engineers have made the decision to master the recording like that so that their music will punch through and sound louder no matter what volume level it is played. This is quite common with some types of music that are mixed and mastered for radio play. What you are experiencing when your meters jump up to and tend to continuously bounce at 225 watts is a recording that has been compressed so that the peaks in the music have been lowered to be closer to the average music level. It is a true watt meter that uses both the voltage and amperage outputs to display the real watts output by the amp. Simon. The output meters on McIntosh amplifiers are designed to respond to 95% full scale to a single cycle tone burst at 2kHz according to the information in the owner's manual. This is where a Discovery tool comes into its own, digging deep to detect privileged accounts and potentially related security failures across your entire infrastructure, so nothing is missed. that users are only given the minimum amount of privileges needed to perform their jobs-and these privileges are promptly revoked when no longer needed).įirstly, you should conduct a privilege audit, to ascertain all privileged accounts and credentials currently in operation, comprising all user and local accounts. This is crucial in the practical ability of administrators to maintain the principle of least privilege (i.e. “Super-administrators” can quickly add or delete users as needed and modify access and permissions to any system based on changes in job responsibilities. So how should you implement the Least Privilege?Īn Access Management platform provides a single point of access and administration for all privileged users. Without visibility on other, unauthorized resources, lateral moves are impossible, and unauthorized or after-hours actions are immediately suspect. System vulnerability is drastically reduced when users are only given access rights to the bare minimum of systems or time frames necessary to do their jobs or complete a one-off task, system vulnerability is drastically reduced. Limiting system-wide access also means that a potential vulnerability in one application is unable to impact other devices or applications, as even those with privileged access to the first system may not have access to any others, limiting vulnerability exposure.Īnother benefit of the Least Privilege is that it quickly minimizes Insider Threat posed by privileged user accounts. ![]() When the scope of changes that a user is able to make is limited, it actually facilitates the monitoring and dependability of resources, data, and servers across the network. The Least Privilege Principle benefits system stability. By facilitating the least privilege, PAM is a critical component of compliance.īy facilitating the Least Privilege Principle, PAM is a critical component of compliance with regulations like the NIST Standard. Section 5.6 of the NIST Standard, for example, discusses the need for “Defense in Depth,” recommending that OT security managers understand and defend against “attacks on privileged and/or shared accounts.” The standard includes a recommendation for “ Restricting ICS user privileges to only those that are required to perform each person’s job (i.e., establishing role-based access control and configuring each role based on the principle of least privilege)”, in effect, emphasizing the need for controlled privilege access. ![]() The concept of Least Privilege is a practical component of most cybersecurity regulations. The idea is that, with bare minimum access across the board, the “attack surface” is reduced, lowering the company’s risk. By the same token, each system process, device, and application should be granted the least authority necessary, to avoid compromising privileged information. The “least privilege” principle involves the restriction of individual user access rights within a company to only those which are necessary in order for them to do their job. In cybersecurity, it’s much the same idea. For the military, this means that sensitive information is only given to those who need that information to perform their duty. ![]() In the military, they have a well-known phrase that happens to succinctly describe the definition of the least privilege principle: “ Need-To-Know Basis”. The hospitality taxes are justified saving the Palmetto Compress Warehouse while building a grand and glorious bus station and train station. If the city needs its museum to score support from hospitality taxes, claiming the museum brings visitors to the city, a combined bus station and train station has a whole lot more to do with bringing in visitors, a whole lot more. That sounds about as exciting as the Richland One Hall of Fame already installed nearby in the convention center up Lincoln. What about current plans by the city to install a city museum? Careful. Not too long ago, the best coffee shop in town – the favorite among cab drivers such as yours truly – was the Seaboard at Lincoln and Gervais, open all night. Part of the ground floor can accommodate a 24-hour coffee shop, or maybe the coffee shop can locate across Pulaski next door to Palmetto Pig. With maybe 40,000 college kids in town, how many bus tickets is that on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving? What do they see?Ĭolumbia needs a new bus station, also suitable for civic pride and one that sits in a high profile close to the corner of Huger and Blossom. The New York to Miami crowd comes through town every night in their sleepers, coming and going. The Palmetto Compress Warehouse can have its floors ripped out, selling the heavy timbers, and then the universal interior space will need cross-bracing to hold up against the next Hugo.Ĭolumbia begs for a new train station, one suitable for civic pride and one that stays open. Around the world, the great train stations all have high ceilings, maybe starting at 30 feet and going higher. ![]() The Palmetto Compress Warehouse is, however, the ideal footprint under the ideal volume for a combined train station and bus station. There’s no decoration or detailing or just plain quirkiness to appeal to the heart. The warehouse is ugly and altogether too straightforward. So let’s not get too sentimental over an old industrial building, the last illustration of what that section of town once did for a living. At four stories high, the roof is not too far up because the floor-to-floor dimension is shallow, too shallow for people but fine for cotton bales. The load-bearing masonry walls are 16 thick, two bricks end-on-end. Design was not at the top of primary concerns when it was built in 1923. No one says who designed it, probably because no one knows. With a proposed purchase price of $5.65 million for the 320,000 sq. Meanwhile, the city says it wants to preserve the Palmetto Compress Warehouse. The building is a low-profile embarrassment. Its restaurant, coin-operated vending, is less than what the Greyhound station offers. The Amtrak station just off Pulaski between Gervais and Devine – you almost can’t find it – is a sheet-metal job open after 10:00 p.m., and it closes at 5:30 a.m. The building is a high-profile embarrassment. Operating 24/7, the place is always hopping with pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The Greyhound Bus station at the corner of Gervais and Harden is a converted automobile dealership. Where does Columbia fit into this national travel evolution? On the whole, though, as the United States slowly approaches the numbers in surface travel found in Europe, train stations and bus stations in the United States should eventually approach the quality found in Europe. Yes, buses are cheap and, yes, trains can be a bargain when compared with one-way walk-up airfare. Some train passengers prefer a sleeper and a dining car over a cramped airplane seat and a folding tray, paying above the going airfare to buy roomy and comfortable travel on the train, enjoying the ever-changing view through the windows at ground level. Many affluent surface passengers who don’t want to drive (or can’t) take the bus or the train because they’re going to a small town, one without an airport. It’s a popular myth in the South that buses and passenger trains are for poor people only, travelers on a tight budget who have to stay on the ground. Even the parking garage is first rate.īut what about surface travel? Who takes the buses and who takes the trains? Should Columbia worry about its status as a transportation hub? Columbians can be secure and proud of their airport facilities. Columbia’s airport is top of the line, especially for a city of its small size and especially for the low amount of passenger traffic. |
